Which layers of asphalt pavement are divided into? What are the causes of the damage?

February 11th, 2022 asphalt pavement,asphalt mixture,asphalt surface
The asphalt pavement is divided into three layers from bottom to top: cushion, base course and surface course.
1. Cushion. Natural gravel or gravel cushion is generally used.
2. Grass roots. The most commonly used is cement stabilized macadam base, in addition to asphalt base and Graded Macadam.

3. Finish. It is generally divided into upper, middle and lower layers, and the performance increases from bottom to top. From coarse-grained asphalt mixture to fine-grained asphalt mixture, the surface layer can also adopt anti sliding surface layer.

Causes of asphalt pavement damage:
1. The asphalt surface course is paved on the cracked old asphalt and cement pavement. Due to the change (decrease) of temperature, the cracks of the old pavement continue to open, so that the new pavement is disconnected at the old cracks.
2. Reflection crack caused by temperature shrinkage cracking of semi-rigid base.
3. The newly laid semi-rigid base course will produce dry shrinkage and dry shrinkage stress with the reduction of moisture in the mixture, resulting in cracking and reflection to the asphalt surface course.
